The Type 2 charging cable is the most important everyday accessory for an electric car: it travels on every trip and connects the car to a public AC charging station or your home wallbox. A good cable withstands frost, moisture and thousands of connections - a bad cable is a risk to both the car and the user. In this guide we go through how to choose the right Mode 3 cable: what power, length, durability and safety mean in practice.
What a Mode 3 cable does - and what it does not do
A Mode 3 cable connects the AC charging station and the car: from station to car, nothing else. Both ends of the cable have a Type 2 connector (IEC 62196-2), the standard connection on European AC charging stations. The cable is not an extension cord and does not replace a charger - we return to that in the safety section.

11 kW or 22 kW? The car's on-board AC charger decides
A charging cable does not produce power, it carries it. In AC charging, the speed is determined by the car's on-board AC charger: if the car accepts at most 11 kW, a more powerful cable will not speed up charging. So the first question is: how much AC charging power does your car support?
- Mamba S11 (11 kW · 16 A · 3 phases) is enough for the majority of electric cars, since most cars have an on-board AC charger of at most 11 kW.
- Mamba S22 (22 kW · 32 A · 3 phases) is the right choice if your car's on-board AC charger supports 22 kW charging and you use stations that supply this power.
Note that the S22 does not replace the S11 for 16 A use - choose the cable according to what your car and the stations you use can actually utilise.
Cable length: sufficient but not excessive
Mamba cables are 5 metres long. That is plenty at a typical charging spot: stations are placed so that the car's charge port is close by, but the location of the port varies between models - some have it at the front, some on the rear wing. A five metre cable reaches the connector even when the car cannot be parked right next to the station or the charge port faces away from it. Remember that the cable must not be extended: if it does not reach, move the car - do not chain cables.
Durability: Zero Bubble full mould and 10,000 tested cycles
A charging cable lives a hard life: it is coiled, twisted, dragged through snow and left in the heat. The jacket of Mamba cables is bubble-free full-mould TPU - the Zero Bubble Power construction means there are no air bubbles in the moulding that would weaken the cable over time. The result is a soft and flexible yet extremely durable cable that stays manageable even in frost.
The numbers speak for durability too: the IP67 rating protects the connectors from dust and water, the operating temperature range is -35...+50 °C and the service life is tested beyond 10,000 charging cycles. The cables are TUV Rheinland certified and come with a 24-month warranty. If you charge once a day, 10,000 cycles corresponds to over 27 years of use - the cable will not be the part of the charging chain that fails first.
Safety: a charging cable is not an extension cord
This needs saying plainly: a Mode 3 charging cable is not an extension cord. It must not be plugged into a socket or used with adapters - its place is between the AC charging station and the car, nowhere else. The cable does not replace a charger either: if you want to charge from a household or CEE socket, you need a separate portable charger.
In a quality cable, safety is built in. Mamba cables have built-in protection (RCD Type A 30 mA AC + RDC-DD 6 mA DC), the conductors are sized for the rated current - 5×2.5 + 1×0.5 mm² in the S11 and 5×6 + 1×0.5 mm² in the S22 - and the construction meets the requirements of the IEC 62196-2 standard. The package includes a cable case and a user manual, so the cable travels in the car neatly and protected.

Summary
First check your car's on-board AC charger power and choose the cable accordingly: for most the Mamba S11 is enough, and for cars supporting 22 kW AC charging the right choice is the Mamba S22. Make sure the cable is fully moulded, IP67 rated and certified - and remember that a charging cable is only ever connected between the station and the car.
