Charging a Tesla Model 3 at home - chargers and cables

The Tesla Model 3 is one of the most popular electric cars in Finland, and most of its charging happens at home or at work - not at a Supercharger. In this article we go through how the Model 3 (and, with the same technology, the Model Y) charges from the AC grid, what equipment is worth buying for home charging and how long charging takes at different power levels.

AC charging on the Model 3: 11 kW, 16 A, three phases

The European Model 3 has a Type 2 charging inlet and an on-board AC charger that accepts up to 11 kW, i.e. 16 A on three phases. The same applies to the Model Y. In practice this means two things: a 22 kW charging device gives no extra benefit for a Model 3, and full 11 kW power requires a three-phase supply. From a single-phase connection, such as a Schuko socket, the car charges at up to 3.7 kW.

Home charging: a portable charger on a CEE socket or a fixed wallbox

If your yard or garage has a red CEE16A industrial socket, the Model 3 charges at the full 11 kW with a portable charger. Q11 is the premium choice with Wi-Fi, the Tuya app and an IP66 housing - it works even at -30 degrees. P11 offers the same 11 kW power with an LCD display and a timer, without an app, at a slightly lower price.

For a fixed solution, a good fit is the Wallbox PRIME 11 kW: a TUV certified wallbox with a fixed 7.5 metre Type 2 cable, RFID access control and dynamic load balancing. Installation is always carried out by a qualified electrician, who also sizes the fuses and the supply correctly.

Schedule charging for cheap electricity hours

In the era of spot-priced electricity, scheduling your charging pays off. In the Tesla app you can schedule charging directly from the car, and the same can be done at the charger end: the P11 has a timer on its LCD display, and charging on the Q11 and the Wallbox PRIME can be scheduled with the Tuya app. When charging is weighted to the cheap night hours, 11 kW power ensures the battery is full in the morning even within a shorter charging window.

For public charging: the Mamba S11 cable

At public AC charging stations you need your own Mode 3 cable. A 16 A cable is enough for the Model 3, because the car's on-board charger is 11 kW - a heavier 32 A cable will not speed up charging. Mamba S11 (11 kW, Type 2, 5 m) is designed for exactly this: the bubble-free full-mould TPU stays flexible in frost, the IP67 connectors withstand the weather and the service life is tested beyond 10,000 charging cycles.

Charging times at different power levels

Depending on the version and model year, the Model 3 battery is about 60 kWh (base versions) or about 75 kWh (Long Range). Below are indicative times from empty to full - in everyday use you usually charge between 20 and 80 percent, so the times are clearly shorter.

Charging methodPowerBattery approx. 60 kWhBattery approx. 75 kWh
Schuko socket (10 A)approx. 2.3 kWapprox. 26 happrox. 33 h
Single-phase charging at 16 A3.7 kWapprox. 16 happrox. 20 h
Three-phase charging at 16 A (CEE16A or wallbox)11 kWapprox. 5.5 happrox. 7 h

The practical conclusion is clear: 11 kW three-phase charging fills the Model 3 battery comfortably overnight, and a typical daily commute recharges in a couple of hours. Schuko charging works as a backup, but for a permanent solution choose a CEE socket and a portable charger, or a fixed charging station.

In winter, charging takes slightly longer because a cold battery accepts power more cautiously and some energy goes into warming the battery. In Finnish conditions, frost resistance is an important selection criterion: the Q11 works at -30 degrees and the Mamba S11 cable stays flexible down to -35 degrees. When the car is charging at home, preheating can run directly on mains power without draining the battery.

Summary

Home charging for a Tesla Model 3 is at its best simple: an 11 kW three-phase solution at home and a Mamba S11 cable in the car for public stations. These two cover practically every charging situation except the Supercharger.
